KUJYAKU & GOSHO-GURUMA

KUJYAKU & GOSHO-GURUMA

It is said that peacocks first arrived in Japan during the Asuka period, and their rare presence was recorded in the Nihon Shoki.

Since ancient times, the peacock has been revered as a guardian deity due to its unparalleled beauty and its ability to devour venomous snakes that harm humans.

In India, it is the national bird; in Greece, it is seen as the incarnation of the goddess Hera; and in Japan, it has been worshipped as Kujaku Myōō, a symbol of "immortality" and "prosperity."

Heian aristocrats, enchanted by the idea of a heaven where peacocks dwell, often imagined and depicted this in Buddhist paintings, longing deeply for such a world.

The path to this heavenly paradise is envisioned as a journey aboard a noble ox-drawn carriage, surrounded by beautiful flowers, ascending toward sacred purple clouds.

This piece embodies that elegant and divine story.
