KORIN-NAMI & MATSUKAWA-BISHI
KORIN-NAMI & MATSUKAWA-BISHI
Ogata Kōrin, a painter and artisan of the Edo period.
Born into a kimono merchant family in Kyoto,
he grew up surrounded by beauty, immersed in the elegance of the capital and the timeless sensibilities of Japanese aesthetics.
Later, encountering the diverse artistic culture of Edo,
he created in his later years his masterpiece, the “Red and White Plum Blossoms Screen,”
where waves were depicted with unique roundness and unceasing motion.
This stylized form later became known as “Kōrin-nami,” or Kōrin waves.
The waves depicted on this kimono
are truly a masterpiece expressing both the eternity of Kōrin waves and the powerful force of raging seas.
On the other side is the “Matsukawa-bishi.”
This motif, inspired by the bark of pine trees, symbolizes longevity and prosperity.
It is said that the diamond pattern—favored even by the warlord Takeda Shingen—
already embodies meanings of stability and transformation,
and by invoking the evergreen pine’s immortality, the Matsukawa-bishi was infused with even greater vitality.
