In the Age of Exploration, sea voyages were far from the safe journeys of today—
they were ventures that risked one’s very life.
Those who set out toward unseen distant lands boarded ships,
carrying dreams and hopes upon the vast ocean.
In every era, humanity has felt romance
in its yearning for the unknown and in the adventure of braving rough waves.

This piece depicts “ships” on both of its sides.

On one side appears a great European sailing ship,
dancing upon white stormy waves like a painting by Courbet.
Such dynamism!
One could almost forget this is a Japanese kimono—
a garment worn by women.

The other side, too, portrays a “ship.”
Here the composition evokes Japan’s treasure ship (*takarabune*).
Its sails, adorned with auspicious motifs such as phoenixes and Genji wheels,
express wishes for fair winds and full sails.
The placement of pines and small boats painted in darker hues,
together with the calmer wave patterns,
seem to embody a poetic wish—finding great joy within tranquil happiness.

The *kurotomesode.*
Though it is said fewer women wear it with each passing year,
for about a century the kurotomesode graced celebratory gatherings,
an indispensable part of Japanese culture as the kimono
that blesses a woman’s new beginning.
